The Milwaukee Brewers finally reached the mountaintop, and their World Series championship makes one conversation around the Pirates harder to have.
Milwaukee won in baseball’s smallest market without an overwhelming payroll. Alex Stumpf breaks down how development, coaching, trades and organizational culture created a sustainable contender — and why simply pointing to payroll doesn’t fully explain Pittsburgh’s inability to do the same.
Watch or listen to today’s OffBeat for what the Brewers just proved to the Pirates.

Key takeaways
1
The Brewers belong in the top-five tier of championship teams of the last 50 years, alongside the 98 Yankees and 2018 Red Sox, and a conservative top-20 champion all time.
Alex Stumpf
2
If you think payroll is the only reason the Pirates haven't been competitive or won a championship, Milwaukee just did it in baseball's smallest market with a below-average payroll.
Alex Stumpf
3
Milwaukee had the hardest possible path, beating the Rays, Dodgers and Padres, the three best non-Brewers teams, and made quick work of all three.
Alex Stumpf
4
The Brewers are the best-run organization in baseball, and having watched them every game for a month, they'd probably win a series against all 29 other teams.
Alex Stumpf
5
Even after losing their manager to the Cubs and their GM, the Brewers will still be competitive in 2027 and in perpetuity until they actually fail.
If for whatever reason the Brewers weren't allowed to be in the postseason this year, they got Thanos snapped away or they were ruled ineligible or whatever reason, I think the three teams that would have had the best chance of winning it all would have been the Rays,
Alex Stumpf
the Dodgers, the Dodgers, and the Padres. The Rays were the top team in the American League. The Dodgers were the number two team in the National League. The Padres were the hottest team going into the postseason. That was the Brewers' path to a championship, even after 103 wins. I don't know if they could have had a harder path. And they made quick work of all three teams.
Alex Stumpf
That included clinching their first World Series Wednesday, beating the Rays 4-1 in Tampa. Baseball's smallest market. That team has been competitive every year for a decade.
Alex Stumpf
And whenever we are going to get ready for an offseason of competitive balance talk, just remember, if they could do it, your team always could have done it.
Alex Stumpf
Good morning and welcome to OffBeat here on North Shore Nine presented by FanDuel. My name is Alex Stumpf and this is a daily look at your Pittsburgh Pirates.
Alex Stumpf
And today, the world champion, Milwaukee Brewers.
Alex Stumpf
What a dominant postseason. What a dominant team.
Alex Stumpf
Like, I, sorry, I just got to give some flowers. I've got to gush for a little bit.
Alex Stumpf
What was the weakness of that club?
Alex Stumpf
They hit whenever they needed to.
Alex Stumpf
They beat up starting pitchers and they got to the bullpen.
Alex Stumpf
That's what happened in game five.
Alex Stumpf
They knew. Let's just get to that pen.
Alex Stumpf
It was a 12-inning game yesterday.
Alex Stumpf
You know what? We'll finish them off today.
Alex Stumpf
And that's exactly what happened.
Alex Stumpf
They break through against Kelly.
Alex Stumpf
Against the bullpen.
Alex Stumpf
Jacob Misiorowski was a banana away from turning in a quality start.
Alex Stumpf
The bullpen did its job.
Alex Stumpf
As it had this entire postseason.
Alex Stumpf
And now the Brewers have clinched it.
Alex Stumpf
I would say I'd be surprised if I wasn't calling it from the beginning.
Alex Stumpf
This is a team that from May or June looked like a serious championship contender.
Alex Stumpf
And as the year went on and they kept playing better and better baseball as the season progressed, it became clear this was the team to beat.
Alex Stumpf
And they had a really rigorous path to the playoffs.
Alex Stumpf
I would argue they had to beat the top three teams.
Alex Stumpf
If you want to be the best, you got to beat the best.
Alex Stumpf
And they did.
Alex Stumpf
They didn't get to face a mid-80 win Guardians team in the ALCS.
Alex Stumpf
No, they had to earn every step of their path.
Alex Stumpf
It was a dominant performance.
Alex Stumpf
They hit whenever they needed to.
Alex Stumpf
They fielded well.
Alex Stumpf
Wilson Contreras was stealing strikes all over the place.
Alex Stumpf
The bullpen was as dominant as we have seen a bullpen in recent memory.
Alex Stumpf
And now all that's left is the debate of, does this Brewers team belong in inner circle discussions?
Alex Stumpf
Is this one of the greatest teams of our lifetimes?
Alex Stumpf
And I think you can make a legitimate claim here.
Alex Stumpf
I'm just going to go back the last 50 Major League Baseball seasons.
Alex Stumpf
So after the big red machine of 1976, of like, what are the greatest teams that have won championships?
Alex Stumpf
So respect to like the 2001 Mariners, you're out of contention.
Alex Stumpf
And I think just off the dome, the ones that immediately come to mind are the 98 Yankees, the 2018 Red Sox.
Alex Stumpf
I think you can make a case for like the 24 Dodgers, I think were probably superior than the 25.
Alex Stumpf
Before them, maybe you could think like 89 Athletics, but I think you're really stretching it at that point.
Alex Stumpf
The Bless You Boys Tigers.
Alex Stumpf
Like, I think the Brewers are in that discussion.
Alex Stumpf
They're in that tier of like top five team of the last 50 years.
Alex Stumpf
Which would put them, what?
Alex Stumpf
We'll just make a conservative top 20 all time?
Alex Stumpf
Top 20 champion?
Alex Stumpf
And they did it.
Alex Stumpf
Look, there's no right way to win a ball game.
Alex Stumpf
There is a right way to win a championship.
Alex Stumpf
And they did it the right way.
Alex Stumpf
They developed.
Alex Stumpf
They developed.
Alex Stumpf
They coached.
Alex Stumpf
They scouted.
Alex Stumpf
They beat people in trades.
Alex Stumpf
They built this incredible culture.
Alex Stumpf
Of unbelievable buy-in.
Alex Stumpf
I remember last year talking to Quinn Priester.
Alex Stumpf
And he talked about, being a top prospect in Pittsburgh and the pressure that he put on himself.
Alex Stumpf
And he fully acknowledged.
Alex Stumpf
He wasn't angrily pointing fingers.
Alex Stumpf
He wasn't pointing fingers.
Alex Stumpf
This was a self-reflection thing on him, but he didn't handle that pressure that well.
Alex Stumpf
And whenever he got to Milwaukee, they helped him process it better.
Alex Stumpf
And I know he wasn't a main character in 2026, but it was emblematic of everything Milwaukee does right.
Alex Stumpf
It was a guy who was traded twice in less than a year.
Alex Stumpf
Former first-rounder who hadn't had any major league success.
Alex Stumpf
And, oh, wow, he becomes a contributor in Milwaukee.
Alex Stumpf
Why?
Alex Stumpf
Because they're coached well.
Alex Stumpf
They have a great culture.
Alex Stumpf
They have support.
Alex Stumpf
He felt supported.
Alex Stumpf
And he thrived.
Alex Stumpf
That's what players do in that market.
Alex Stumpf
That's what they do in that environment, in that organization.
Alex Stumpf
And it's in baseball's smallest market.
Alex Stumpf
We're going to hear so much about payrolls and competitive balance this offseason.
Alex Stumpf
But just, and I don't know if it's just, I am always aware of what's going on, like, Pirates social media.
Alex Stumpf
Or at least most of the time aware of what's going on Pirates social media.
Alex Stumpf
But seeing the national discourse of, like, Pirates fans should be talking about a payroll because they haven't had nuanced discussions.
Alex Stumpf
Let me just say this.
Alex Stumpf
If you think the payroll is the only reason why the Pirates haven't been competitive, why they haven't been able to become a champion, well, Milwaukee did it.
Alex Stumpf
They did it.
Alex Stumpf
Yeah, they did outspend them.
Alex Stumpf
That's not exactly a flex, if you want to use that as an argument.
Alex Stumpf
But it was still a small market with a below average payroll who just kicked ass because they did everything right.
Alex Stumpf
And everything, not meaning like it was a perfect game, but it's like everything was in that desire of a decade straight of winning.
Alex Stumpf
This is their championship year, but they have had years over the last decade where they have come close.
Alex Stumpf
They have been good enough to win a pennant or seriously, earnestly compete for a World Series.
Alex Stumpf
I would argue this was like the 2020 Dodgers.
Alex Stumpf
Of just, you put up enough shots, eventually one is going to go through the net.
Alex Stumpf
And it did.
Alex Stumpf
And there's nothing cheap about it.
Alex Stumpf
This was the best team in baseball, winning baseball's greatest trophy.
Alex Stumpf
We're going to talk a little more about that in a minute.
Alex Stumpf
But first, I'd like to thank today's sponsor, Larine Co
Alex Stumpf
We all know nicotine pouches are popular, and part of it isn't so much the nicotine as it is the routine.
Alex Stumpf
Larine just launched a pouch that keeps the routine, but leaves the nicotine out.
Alex Stumpf
Larine Co pouches swap out the nicotine and give you clean focus and support your enamel the whole time they're in.
Alex Stumpf
Just tuck one in and go about your day.
Alex Stumpf
Every pouch has a half cup of coffee's worth of caffeine, plus L-theanine and alpha-GPC for a smooth, steady focus with no energy crash.
Alex Stumpf
And it gives your teeth daily enamel support in between brushings.
Alex Stumpf
It comes in mint, cinnamon, and mango, and it's nicotine-free always.
Alex Stumpf
It's doing something good for your teeth, and it gives you smooth energy and focus without those chitters.
Alex Stumpf
Every other pouch out there makes you pick between something that helps you focus and something that's actually good for your teeth.
Alex Stumpf
This is the only one designed to do both, and it comes from a brand that's leading the way at supporting your oral health.
Alex Stumpf
Give Larine a try.
Alex Stumpf
Right now, Larine Co is offering our listeners up to 50% off at buylorene.com slash northshore.
Alex Stumpf
That's buylorene, L-A-R-I-N-E dot com slash northshore for up to 50% off.
Alex Stumpf
The Brewers, look, having watched them for a month, every game pretty much of theirs for a month, it feels like if they had to play all 29 teams and win every series, they probably would.
Alex Stumpf
And yeah, if you want to take a Pirates-centric angle, the Pirates won 7 of 13 against them this year.
Alex Stumpf
But even then, it had been a hot minute since the last time they had beaten Milwaukee in a season series.
Alex Stumpf
Like they didn't in 2015.
Alex Stumpf
They didn't, in other years where they were competitive, or at least semi of the mix.
Alex Stumpf
Even whenever both of these teams were bad, Milwaukee consistently beat the Pirates.
Alex Stumpf
This is just an organization that proves top to bottom what you can do, what any team can do.
Alex Stumpf
The Rays, if they can do it, why couldn't any other team?
Alex Stumpf
This is the best run organization in baseball.
Alex Stumpf
And they've done it in the smallest market with middling at best payrolls.
Alex Stumpf
And they deserve it.
Alex Stumpf
Like I said, it's been a decade.
Alex Stumpf
Yeah, they haven't made the playoffs every year in a decade, but whatever they don't in like 2022, they're signing Cutch.
Alex Stumpf
They're making a push.
Alex Stumpf
And yeah, they might have to trade a Corbin Burns.
Alex Stumpf
But they get pieces in return.
Alex Stumpf
Josh Hader was traded, and Gasser takes his place, and he absolutely crushes game three, which was the nail in the coffin.
Alex Stumpf
I tweeted out that picture of the guy who was dressed up as Bernie Brewer, tears in his eyes whenever he sees that rally, the fifth inning, come through, and it's 7-0 Brewers.
Alex Stumpf
And you can see, like, in his eyes, like, oh my God, they're going to win the World Series.
Alex Stumpf
Like, the snowball has fallen down the mountain to a point that it cannot be stopped.
Alex Stumpf
It might not be a clean sweep.
Alex Stumpf
It's a dirty sweep, five games after losing a 12-inning marathon.
Alex Stumpf
But it's all the same.
Alex Stumpf
The banner will still fly.
Alex Stumpf
This is a team that proved that if they can do it, any other team could do it.
Alex Stumpf
I've done a couple podcasts about the Brewers, about their commitment to the decade, and there wasn't a rebuild, there wasn't a bridge year, there wasn't a gap year or whatever.
Alex Stumpf
I talked about the week that I spent covering them and how the impressions they left have really influenced how I've looked at baseball this year.
Alex Stumpf
I'm not at all surprised that they are at the mountaintop right now.
Alex Stumpf
And they deserve it.
Alex Stumpf
I don't know if this is going to be one, and this team maybe takes a bit of a backseat.
Alex Stumpf
In the, in the NL Central, where the Cubs, who stole their manager, hasn't done them a lick of good, hasn't stopped Milwaukee.
Alex Stumpf
Milwaukee lost their manager, they lost their GM, and they just keep trucking because they're, it's just, that snowball.
Alex Stumpf
It's why I think they're going to still be competitive in 2027.
Alex Stumpf
Well, I think they're going to be competitive in perpetuity until I see them fail.
Alex Stumpf
Because that's what great teams do.
Alex Stumpf
And this was a great team.
