Final Takeaways from an Over .500 2026 Season

It's a little bittersweet.

it's at least a winning season.

That is something you can talk about for this very long offseason that's coming up.

Yeah, might be a little longer offseason than we hope.

So who knows whenever we're going to do another one of these.

Jared Jones was outstanding again today.

just what a what an end to his season.

A lot of a lot of good stuff to talk about today.

There's a lot of good stuff.

You talk about Jared Jones having a very good start.

he has a very good ending this season.

Like you mentioned, season as a whole, very productive.

The game starts with Konnor Griffin getting his sixth home run today.

Leads off with a home run.

If you're going to have one last game to enjoy, this was an enjoyable game to have.

Lake Bachar has a three-strikeout, two-out inning.

Like, yeah, this game had everything.

Three-strikeout, two-out inning?

Yeah.

it was still three outs.

It was just... Yeah.

It was still three-out inning.

All innings are three outs.

Well, it started with Kelly.

Right.

Well, Kelly got an out, though.

Right.

Yeah.

And then Bachar got three strikeouts to have two outs.

The pass ball, Jim.

Yeah, I know.

But it was still a three-out inning.

But he only needed to record two.

Anyways.

Yeah, what do you want to start talking about?

Let's talk about Jared Jones.

Because, honestly, man...

there's certainly things to be excited about in twenty twenty seven players specifically.

Right.

But I don't know if I anticipated being any more excited about Jared Jones heading into twenty twenty seven.

They am right now.

there's question marks about his durability and what type of pitcher he is.

And can he be, again, he was exciting in twenty twenty four.

You had a hundo boys, he faded towards the end and again, you had question marks, but.

There's no question, like no question right now.

If you're questioning it, I don't know how you are, that he is a starting pitcher and he can be a damn good one.

Yeah, this was at least, just from my memory, the fourth time.

At least the fourth time he's brought a no-hitter into at least the fourth inning.

He gave up one hit today.

No walks.

Struck out five.

Everything was working for him.

He was locating the fastball.

Slider was getting swings and misses today for him.

Threw a few good change-ups and curveballs.

But yeah, just what a September.

For Jared Jones, just to reiterate how he finished the season here, he started five games in September.

He struck out forty batters in twenty nine innings.

Zero point nine three ERA.

And in three of his five starts, he only gave up one hit.

One hit like more than half of his starts this month.

He threw a one hitter.

Just an incredible end of the year.

You look at the end of the season numbers now to three point seven to ERA for Jared Jones.

He ends up finishing.

I think he I think he hit the one hundred inning mark today as well.

Point two.

Yeah.

Yeah.

So he hit the hundred inning mark today.

Yeah.

Just an outstanding season overall from Jared Jones finishes with a better ERA than Paul Skenes.

Like I jokingly said, Paul Skenes slowly becoming the fourth starter on this team.

yeah man Jones again like he just had everything going from today and this isn't just like it was you know one start this is what he's been more or less in September and even a little bit longer than that you know but September has just been dominant and he's the month

long but Thirteen hits in those twenty nine innings in the month of September.

He's just unhittable.

And part of that, too, is we talk about the growth and development.

It's not just the fact that his stuff is working so good and he's unhittable.

It's the four walks in there also.

the forty strikeouts, the four walks, just seeing what he has become and.

When you come back from that type of surgery, and I know it wasn't technically Tommy John, so there's not too much precedent in this one, like what returns and the control and command and such.

A lot of times when guys come back from Tommy John surgery, it is the command that's last to come.

You see a lot of walks and whatnot, and the control's a little bit off.

You saw that a little bit earlier in this season, and he finished this.

Again, we talked about four strikeouts and four walks today.

Again, obviously showing that.

This is one of the best pitchers in baseball type of stuff that he's showing.

So, again, to eliminate all the, is this guy a reliever or a starter?

He's showing he's a starter.

Now, is he going to be this guy next year?

you can't expect him to be this guy as of September, right?

But he is every bit of – he is – penned in this rotation where he slots TBD, but also like you mentioned, crossing the one hundred inning mark this year.

That's important.

that's going into next year.

These guys having it is behind them.

So.

So, yeah, I want to ask you this, though, talking about innings.

There's a lot of a lot of hoopla, on Twitter and Facebook and whatnot.

He goes just four innings today, Jim.

He was cruising.

He goes just for give it to the bullpen to watch them blow it.

Right.

What's your stance on him going for today?

It's the hundred and sixty second game of the year.

You're not really playing for anything.

Just.

I couldn't care less that Jared Jones only went four innings today.

Couldn't care less.

Would I have liked to have seen him go longer?

Sure.

But I'm not going to lose any.

Joy or happiness watching this game by getting upset because they pulled the starting pitcher after four innings in a game that doesn't mean anything.

I feel like that's the correct way to look at this.

This was clearly a game where really both teams, right?

this wasn't even just a pirate thing.

Both teams very clearly treated this game like a, Hey, it would be cool if we won this, but like, we don't have to, Brandon Lowe didn't start.

Bryan Reynolds got pulled in the third inning.

Ryan O'Hearn got pulled after, but three plate appearances once he hit his incentive, which kudos to the pirates for making sure he gets to that.

Yeah, there's nothing to get upset about pulling Jared Jones after four innings.

More than anything, what I'm really happy about is he got through the season healthy.

He got through the season looking really good.

He got stronger as the season progressed.

And more than anything, because this was Jared Jones version two point oh that we saw, right?

Like the original Jared Jones we saw.

was rookie jared jones twenty two-year-old jared jones in twenty twenty four and that version of jared jones he wasn't super efficient like he was electric at times but you know he wasn't really much of

an innings eater type of guy i think what we saw jared jones do this year is just really trust his stuff a lot more and it allowed him to just be a way more efficient pitcher like the

pirates i don't think would have liked to have had Jared Jones throw as many innings as he did this year.

But there were so many times when he was on those pitch counts of like, fifty-five, sixty-five, where he'd go six, seven innings just because...

he was getting out super quick.

So yeah, I thought it was just a really great year from Jared Jones in terms of just becoming the next version of himself as a pitcher.

He, the stuff was still as good as it's ever been, maybe even better.

But just like Jared Jones, the pitcher took a big step forward this year.

I agree with all that.

I agree with all that.

Again, you saw the progression.

The progression was obviously something you would assume to happen.

Again, you're coming off of a major injury.

I'm not expecting to see this version of Jared Jones we saw today earlier on in the season.

You're going to have those struggles and whatnot, and he did.

He certainly did.

That's why people were questioning it early on.

But to see how he's progressed this year and then to look at how he's progressed for his career, absolutely.

Absolutely.

And I love...

like i mentioned bubba and this as well like i love that psychoticness in them but what you saw on bubba was him channeling it a little bit differently and that was the progression you saw from

him and jared jones has that dog in him too you know and to see how he's able to channel it as well like absolutely man I've loved everything I've seen out of Jared Jones to end the season.

And, yeah, like, what a way to cap it.

And like you mentioned, too, with the four innings, I have no problem with that also.

The biggest thing for me, and we talked about this on Bucco Brew, like, we wouldn't be surprised if this whole week was almost treated like spring training.

Go get your work in, come out.

Like, how many pitches are we going to go more than four innings this week?

Which, of course, we only have three starters on the team.

So...

Wasn't going to be that many opportunities.

But it's like I wouldn't be shocked if all of them were like, well, here's four and come out.

The fact that Jared Jones went seven his first time this week, I don't know if that played a part into this one or not.

But, again, like he was – you're going to let him go.

He had a no-hitter.

He had a perfect game going to the sixth inning.

So, like, I get that.

But, like, today, go get your work in.

You had four fantastic innings.

The most important thing is you did top the one hundred inning mark.

Kudos to that.

The most important thing, I guess, that was secondary.

The most important thing was you finished healthy and strong.

Let's get you out.

There's no reason to go another inning.

It's a four-nothing ball game and a meaningless game.

Look at it as a positive.

Not a problem at all to allow him to go one more inning and maybe get that win or whatnot.

You did your work.

Yeah, I'm sure today went about as good as Don Kelly could hope for.

Yeah.

Like you mentioned, Bryan Reynolds plays all one sixty two.

It's like you got your one sixty two in.

Let's come out.

Congratulations.

Good season again.

Like no big deal for me in any of that.

But yeah, let's talk how the game started too.

Konnor Griffin leads off.

He's had not really an up and down season.

He started, he saw the rookie struggles, he saw him progress.

He was really taking off and got the injury.

He came back and I felt like he finished strong.

And it was nice to cap off the season with a home run, a two for four performance from him.

Had a one run, two RBIs, the home run there.

So it was nice seeing him cap off the season as well with a good game.

Yeah.

he hadn't hit a home run since coming off the IL.

So, what was the second pitch of the game lined it right over the fence, for his sixth home run of the year.

I think if there's one thing, yeah, like you're hoping, what does, what does a year old Konnor Griffin look like?

Maybe, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five home runs.

Like, He certainly has the power.

It's in there.

I think we've seen it at times this year, but I think over the course of an entire season, we're going to really be happy with what we see out of the first full year of Konnor Griffin.

coming back next year.

But yeah, good to see him end on a, on a strong note, a two for four hit the ball really hard today.

He grounded into a double play too.

He hit it even harder than he hit his home run.

So, Doug's vindicated there a little bit on the exit velocity stuff.

double play was, I think the double play had a higher expected batting average than the home run too.

So yeah, there you go.

Doug wins that round.

but no good, strong, start for Konnor Griffin.

I think it was apparent, too, that his hand was still bothering him a little bit.

There were a couple times even during today's broadcast where he shook his hand a little bit, looked at his hand.

But I wonder how much that had to play in just the lack of power over this past month or so.

Maybe.

But yeah, awesome to see him end the year with a home run.

Yes.

And he ends the season at a ninety eight weighted runs created plus one and a half four right now.

And that's in eighty games.

So it's almost like we'll be exactly talked about coming into this year.

Now, I know he was robbed of a few months and such, which maybe him playing better.

Those numbers could still be better.

But regardless, we said like.

got to expect about league average you know maybe even below league average but the defense and all that will come up like he probably could be a three-WAR player so be like a league average player and that's what he was like if you played a full season you're basically talking about a three-WAR player hitting

about league average so you're talking about what's you know Konnor Griffin looked like i could anticipate him playing better he showed that he was better than those first you know month and a half that he was a rookie and such and Yeah, I guess another guy that you're excited to

see.

And he certainly has the body to anticipate.

he's just twenty years old right now.

And as we're talking about, we saw him as an eighteen year old, in spring training.

Like he is every bit of a unit.

And yeah, it's going to be nice to see like what twenty one year old Konnor Griffin can do next year.

But another guy, he finishes a strong high note that you're excited about for next year as well.

Yeah, since his twentieth birthday, right?

Because he struggled those first couple weeks in the majors.

But since he turned twenty on April twenty third, Konnor Griffin hit two ninety two.

He slugged for forty OPS over seven eighty.

Like he's had a really strong.

he's had a really strong rookie season really strong rookie season like right after that initial adjustment period he's been he's been pretty darn good especially for how young he is right yeah and you see the defense now he

had some struggles this week defensively but you see overall in totality the defense he's put up to at shortstop it's been fantastic yeah cool well let's go ahead and Take a little break here.

I want to bring up another guy.

We talked about one rookie.

Let's talk about the rookie of the year, Billy Cook, who also was one for four today, but had a run, had an RBI.

The Pirates won four to two.

If Billy Cook wasn't in this game, we might still be in extra innings right now.

Yeah, I don't know about that, but it was a big hit that Billy Cook had.

at this point, it was a two nothing game in the fourth when he gets up with runners on with a runner on second and yeah, double down the line and left field.

And they were talking about it on the broadcast to like Billy Cook's almost exclusively a late inning defensive replacement this season.

He doesn't get a lot of at bats.

He doesn't get a lot of plate appearances.

In fact, I don't think he's had in a bat since he hasn't had a bat.

He had an at bat yesterday and he had an at bat on September eleventh.

He's had two at bats this month.

That's wild.

Like the dude's played.

he's played in twelve games, but he's had two at bats.

So, yeah, you get a start like this.

he hasn't started a game since.

August twenty third, it's been over a month since he started a game.

it's, that's a, just, it's a tough spot to be in as a hitter.

Like you just get into no rhythm whatsoever.

He doesn't even get to pinch it every now and then.

So to just be stuck in, the number nine hole in the last game of the year, and to come through with a big RBI double, like that's, that is something that is a legit thing that you got to give him some credit for.

I always joke about it, but the pirates, the, Fifty seven and thirty when Billy Cook plays.

Numbers don't lie.

He is the rookie of the year.

He almost exclusively comes in late games when the Pirates are winning.

So that's why it's skewed like that.

But that's all meaningless.

Made up stats.

Fun little tidbit.

But.

Yeah, it is crazy.

So, he played in eighty-seven games this year.

And after today, eighty-seven games, he had four plate appearances today.

So, fifty-eight plate appearances in eighty-seven games.

That's just absurd.

And he was on the team most of the year.

Almost all year.

Yeah.

he was...

Very subtly down in AAA.

So, like, kudos to Billy Cook.

he was basically the designated cone hoister.

He was the cone hoister, right, which we heard about multiple times over the course of the year.

Probably four times the amount, at least, than he had played appearances this year.

Yeah.

Yeah, most of Billy Cook's screen time came from hoisting a cone.

Right.

But like you said, it's tough to do that, get any type of rhythm.

And, hey, took him astride.

Good job, Billy.

But yeah, big hit from him today.

Third RBI, too.

He had three RBIs this year.

Wild.

Hey, you know?

Anyways, yeah.

Also, fun fact.

Three RBIs never drove in someone who isn't named Gonzalez.

He drove in Nick twice and Jacob once.

That's funny.

There you go.

There it is.

Boom.

Anyways.

Yeah.

the pirates only had seven hits today.

Three walks again, two of them from Konnor Griffin.

We talked about one for Billy cook.

Jake Mangum had two hits.

He went two for three today with an RBI.

Nick Gonzales went two for four.

So he was guaranteed.

He does.

He finishes the season over three hundred, a three or three batting average.

Not so much the race it was looking at, in the middle of the season for the batting title, but still a very good productive year, especially for the batting average from Nick Gonzales.

We mentioned again, he has a three or three batting average, but a seven fifty five OPS, a nice solid offensive year from Nick Gonzales.

Yeah, I was just looking to see the pirates have this is the first time a pirate who was a qualified hitter has had a batting average over three hundred since Brian

Reynolds did it in twenty twenty one.

He hit three oh two.

But you look like this entire century.

This is the twenty first time a Pittsburgh Pirate has hit three hundred or better.

Most of those are like early on to with, Kendall and Giles and Freddie Sanchez.

Like those guys are taking up a lot of thoughts.

So it's something that hasn't happened that often.

if I if I even switch this since to since two thousand ten, you're looking at there's only this is the eleventh time it's happened since two thousand ten.

Okay.

Again, that is something.

Especially in this day and age.

there were like five people this year in the National League to do it.

Nick Gonzales was one of them.

Yep.

So, yeah, offensively, not a huge game for the Pirates.

They did just enough to score the four runs.

And, as we mentioned, the pitching-wise, Jared Jones looked outstanding.

Antwone Kelly, I want to talk about him a little bit.

he goes two point one today.

He had two innings where it was scoreless, didn't put the third time, and he gives up Two home runs.

Not a great way to end it.

It makes the game now interesting.

It's four to two, and again, he records one out, does end.

So he leaves the game going, two point one, two earned runs today, a walk, two strikeouts.

His ERA finishes.

It was at one point a three, I believe, ninety-ish.

He ends it today at a four, eight, two on the year.

But I do want to talk about him a little bit, because this is something we have talked about, and this is what he did show today.

I do like him in these small spurts.

It does seem like when he goes three innings, he stretches out.

That's where he goes into trouble.

But like Antwone Kelly for an inning looks pretty productive.

Yeah.

I thought he looked good in this.

he had two scoreless innings back to back and then yeah, the third inning was a disaster.

Gave up two homers.

One of them was just a bomb that he gave up to who was at Valencia, I think hit it.

But yeah, I, it's been a mixed bag for Kelly this year.

Like he's looked good at times.

He's looked pretty rough at times.

I think it just goes back to, he says, this is a, is not really used to pitching

out of the bullpen.

He did it a few times in like the super lower levels, but has mostly been a starting pitcher the last couple of years.

Ends the year with a four point eight to ERA.

not exactly where you'd want it to be, but you saw some signs from him.

Like you said, like I think I think where he's shown that he's pretty good is when you're asking him to just, hey, go out there and give me your best inning.

Like, go out there for one inning, throw a hundred and two and empty the tank.

You get you get one inning where he's gone into a little bit of problems is, the multi innings facing guys a second time.

where the problems have been and it's just you look at his stuff his stuff just isn't as good when he's doing that like when he's when he's throwing more pitches than fifteen his fastball isn't one oh two his fastball is ninety seven

right and there's a big difference between as we've seen with Paul Skenes right there's a big difference between ninety six ninety seven then one oh two one oh three

And so I think there's still a lot about Antwone Kelly to like in terms of, a potential starting pitcher.

But I think we certainly saw how much more effective he can be in a shorter role when just told, hey, like, let loose here.

Just let loose.

You're here for get us three outs.

Give me your best stuff.

And when asked to do that, he's looked pretty darn good.

I agree.

He's certainly going to be one of those pitchers because of the season he had that fans are going to look at and be like, let's write this guy off.

But I'm not one of those.

I look at him for next year, and the good thing is he's not going to be an arm that you're going to rely upon.

That's why we're excited about this bullpen next year is because the top down is very strong.

So really what we're looking at is some middle relievers, and if Antwone Kelly is going to be an option to be one of those middle relievers next year, I'm excited about that.

I think he does have some good stuff for that particular role.

If he's going to be a setup man, like your seventh-inning man, okay, now I'm worried.

He's got to find something here.

But if he's just going to be like how he was this year, just one of these options, and again, to do it more in a one-inning role, I think he's very capable of that.

So, I know a lot of people don't look at this game and like a season and say, yeah, Antwone Kelly sucks, right.

I'm off.

But it's like, if you look down for that one inning, even that second inning, those are two really good innings.

It wasn't until he came in for that third time that it looked very bad.

But then, yeah, like Bachar comes in and yeah, real quick, real quick on Antwone Kelly to like the pitch modeling, metrics all really like him.

One hundred and ten stuff plus from him this year.

And if you break that down, even by like game.

Yeah.

The games where he's not throwing as many pitches, the stuff plus is nasty.

His stuff is nastier in the shorter stints.

All in all, obviously, I think IU would have liked to see more, but I'm encouraged from age twenty to Antwone Kelly.

Yeah, for sure.

Like I mentioned, the reason...

You're excited about that.

Kelly shouldn't be in like these big major roles next year.

High leverage, right?

He's going to be an option.

You like him for that.

And the reason for that is because like this next picture, like Lake Bachar, he was a guy that pirates traded for this year.

He comes in and, Hey, there were some interesting things from him in Miami.

Got him virtually for free.

that trade was not much.

You have so much control with him, and he comes over.

And Jim, honestly, since coming over as a pirate, he's been doing it in multiple type of roles as an opener, middle reliever, and such.

One inning, two innings, three innings.

Today he goes one point two, has the four strikeouts.

But since becoming a pirate, twenty-eight innings, two point five seven ERA, one eighteen whip.

He's been fantastic.

Like, fantastic.

And today, again, just caps it off.

he has some really nice, some good stuff.

And we saw, like, again, that inning.

I know there was one out.

He only needed to record two.

He had to strike out three guys to do it, but he struck out three straight guys to do it.

Bachar's been fantastic.

And another guy I'm excited about for next year for this bullpen.

Yeah, I think what I like about Bachar is just the versatility.

You can use him a lot of different ways.

They had to rely on him a lot for that opener role this year because they were just running out of starting pitchers.

I think, yeah, in a perfect world, you're using him as...

just like your bridge guy.

Like if you, if your starting pitcher goes four or five, then, Bachar can come in and give you two innings to bridge the gap towards the back end of your rotation.

but he also like when needed to, if need be, you can call him on to pitch a scoreless seventh or a scoreless eighth.

If you, if you need them to like, he has the ability to do that reminds me of just like a not as good Carmen Mlodzinski that's but similar skill sets where like the stuff is pretty good that he can he

can he can do a lot of good things against the lineup the first time through and so you know having that ability to give you the length is a valuable tool for a reliever but

The reason why I feel good about guys like Dotel and guys like Kelly is because you look at this bullpen right now between Bachar, Yohan, Mlodzinski, Weaver,

Montgomery, all these guys coming back.

You don't need these young guys to be back-end arms right off the bat.

You just need them to, hey, you know what?

I need you to pitch a scoreless sixth.

It's a lot easier to do that than you're putting them in better positions to succeed.

So, yeah, I like what we saw from Bachar.

The fact that the Pirates still have team control of him for, I think, three more seasons after this is very nice.

They've got a lot of pieces to this bullpen already in place, especially from the right-hand side.

I think they need to add a left-handed reliever, but from the right-hand side, this bullpen's not looking too bad.

Yeah, and like you said, a lot of them come with different ways of being utilized.

Like, Yohan can go multiple innings in different ways, and Bachar can.

Mlodzinski can.

That's something the Pirates, I thought, have done very well with the past three years is using guys like that and putting them in situations that benefit them.

So, Bachar comes in, does great, and then, of course, Mason Montgomery, I know he had the blowup last night.

That was his first time in, like, two months giving up any runs.

It happens.

His twenty-five-inning scoreless innings.

Streak ended last night, but it's nice that he was able to come in today and finish the season on a high note.

He gets a save.

He goes one inning, two strikeouts, earns his eighteenth save on the year.

So it was nice to see Montgomery.

Of course, they needed it the closest game down because, again, it was a four to two game at that point.

It was close.

So you get your guy in.

He does it.

He finishes the year on a high note.

We've said so many things about Mason Montgomery.

I'm not sure how much more we can today, but he earned and deserves it.

Yeah, that was really nice to see because he's had such a good season and especially such a good like last three months.

Just an incredible stretch that like it would have sucked to end the year on a blown save loss three run outing.

So yeah, being able to just bounce back immediately come in today, pick up the save to strikeouts one, two, three inning, get it over with quickly with no drama whatsoever.

he deserved to end the season on a good note absolutely and even when you had those you know that blow up yesterday he now finishes the year with a two eight era that's great stuff

yeah it was outstanding work outstanding work that's it so the pirates win four to two they are eighty two and eighty on the year and with that jim for the very last time i think it's time

to give away some sandwiches isn't it I think so.

We did a hundred and sixty two of these and some of them were fun.

Some of them were not so fun, but it was great to do it with you guys.

But this year, there was more that were fun.

And that was awesome, at least, too.

A lot of times, we're struggling in May.

And even the not fun ones, they meant something.

The last few years of us doing this, it's like we're doing post-game shows for just completely meaningless wins and losses.

This season, there was more riding on every single one of these games.

Should be a fun postseason, even though the Pirates aren't a part of it.
